Celebrating Outstanding Success at the 2026 Advanced STEM Research Competition: February 26, 2026
White Pine STEM Academy students recently demonstrated exceptional innovation, research, and scientific curiosity at the 2026 STEM competition, bringing home numerous awards across multiple categories. The event showcased student projects from across the region, highlighting creativity, problem-solving, and real-world scientific application.
We are incredibly proud to share that White Pine STEM Academy was recognized as a Top Performing School, a testament to the dedication of our students, teachers, and mentors who work every day to cultivate a culture of inquiry and discovery.
Student Research Making an Impact
Several students received recognition for their outstanding research projects.
Clara Briscoe earned multiple awards for her project, “How Does the Amount of Datasets Affect an AI’s Ability to Recognize Human-Labeled Emotional Patterns?” Clara received Teacher’s Choice First Place, the INL Future Scientist and Engineer Leadership Award, the ISU Best Use of Artificial Intelligence Award, and Best of Category in Computer & Technology (D1). Her work explored how artificial intelligence systems learn to interpret emotional data and demonstrated both innovation and leadership in STEM.
Adam Bailey earned 1st Place in Biological Science (D2) for his project exploring how yeast can be biologically engineered for improved performance in bread production, cheese development, and water filtration. His work highlighted the important role biotechnology can play in improving everyday systems.
Ethan Neil received both the CEI Outstanding Application of Science to Human Health Award and the ISU Biomedical Research Innovation Award for his project, “Jellyfish and Their Uses in Medical Application.” Ethan also placed 2nd in Biological Science (D2). His research examined how jellyfish proteins and structures may contribute to medical advancements.
Engineering and Technology Innovation
White Pine students also stood out for their engineering and technological creativity.
Duncan Picket was recognized for his project S.P.O.T., earning the Merrick & Co Most Innovative Engineering Approach to Solving a Problem Award as well as the CEI Mechatronics Future Engineer Award. His work demonstrated impressive engineering design and problem-solving skills.
Devin Kerr received the CEI Future Forward Technology Award for his project focused on developing an affordable tool to maximize crop growth, addressing real-world agricultural challenges through technological innovation.
Reese Toop earned 3rd Place in Computer & Technology (D2) for his work exploring technology-based solutions and applications in STEM.
Health, Human Science, and Community Impact
Several projects focused on improving health and well-being.
Jersie Barry received the Melaleuca Enhancing Lives Award for the project “The Effects of Screening for Breast Cancer.” Her research emphasized the importance of early detection and public health awareness. She also received recognition in the Health & Human Science category (D1).
Emma Kent earned 1st Place in Health & Human Science (D2) for her work exploring important human health topics and demonstrating strong scientific methodology.
Excellence in Scientific Communication
In addition to research awards, Logan Morse received the Best Use of Graphics on a Poster Award, recognizing the clear and engaging way his project communicated scientific ideas through visual presentation.
A Celebration of Curiosity and Innovation
The success of White Pine STEM Academy students at the 2026 competition highlights the power of hands-on learning, inquiry-based research, and a strong STEM culture. From artificial intelligence and biomedical research to engineering design and agricultural innovation, our students are tackling meaningful problems and developing the skills needed to become the next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators.
